Got the Winter Workout Blues? 5 Tips for Bouncing Back
It’s warm inside, probably cold outside; you’re feeling the winter blues….. who wants to workout? Here are 5 tips for getting you out, keeping your fitness up and having you ready to bounce into spring when it arrives!
• Change your attitude: it really is a case of mind over matter. No matter how blue you are feeling, you can change how you feel. In fact, you are the only one who can! Watch your self-talk – what you say to yourself when no one else is listening. The more you tell yourself how blue you feel, the worse you will feel – you are actually talking yourself into your mood! Change what you are saying in your mind to something a little more positive.
• Just do it: instead of coming up with all the reasons why you won’t exercise, just get your gear and go do it! We humans think too much and act too little sometimes. Sure, there might be all sorts of reasons why you shouldn’t workout……but there are also lots of really good reasons why you should!
• Plan an event for spring or summer when the weather warms up again. You might book a trip to a beach destination or resort (you will have to look good for that!) or enter a marathon or fun run (you will have to keep your fitness up for that!) Get friends or family involved so you have support. To be effective, you will have to actually enter the race or book the holiday – just “planning to” won’t have the same motivating factor.
• Book into a class: there is nothing like making a commitment to keep us motivated. Book into a class at your local gym, maybe something you’ve not done before. Talk a friend into doing it with you for mutual support. A weekly class will give you a reason to keep fit. Buy yourself some new gym clothes so that you will feel good as well as looking good.
• Be kind to yourself: after all, you are only human. Be gentle with yourself when the winter blues win and you don’t take that walk today. Have a hot bath, light some candles, burn some essential oils to help lift your mood (mandarin is wonderful as a mood lifter), relax and read a magazine. Do something for you, to make you feel good, and then you will be able to beat those winter blues tomorrow and get out and workout.
