Good Eating Habits for Healthy Living

October 1, 2009

goodeatinghabitWe miscalculate the effect of food on our health. All know, some foods are unhealthy; but we don’t know what kind of diseases arises because of consumption of such food.

For instance, lot of fat causes obesity; saturated fats can result in stroke and other heart diseases. Pasta, white bread etc causes diabetes.

Here are a few features which form a part of what we eat and which will have an effect on our health either negatively or positively.

Natural foodVegetables and fruits which are produced in the natural way, are not only tasty, but also healthy. As they are allowed to grow at their own pace, they have all the vitamins and nutrients in them.

This develops our immunity system, keeps us healthy and slows down the aging process. Organic food doesn’t have destructive chemicals.

Antioxidants – Foods which are rich in antioxidants flush out the toxins from the body, which results in the cells to regenerate healthily without harming our DNA. This slows down the process of ageing and also wards off from cancer.

Glycemic levelHigh blood sugar is not healthy. Refined food, like sugar and bread, contain high sugar in them which are absorbed immediately by the body and increase the blood sugar level.

Consuming food which has carbohydrates also results in diabetes. But those which have digestible carbohydrates enable to maintain the sugar level.

Fat – Body requires fat, but too much fat can lead to obesity. There is bad and good fat. Saturated fat shoots up the cholesterol as against the unsaturated vegetable fat which is healthy. For instance olive oil increases the good cholesterol which protects from heart diseases.

Cooking method – How the food is prepared also plays a role in the gain derived form the food. For example, when the oil is overheated it is not good for health.

Potatoes are better when cooked and not fried. Cooking the vegetables in water is not very healthy, whereas if it is steamed the nutrients will be retained in the vegetables.

Digestive system – The digestive system works differently for each person. If a certain food doesn’t suit you, it reacts badly and weakens the immunity level. So sticking to fruits, food with fiber content, whole grains and vegetables will not affect the system.

Above mentioned things give an idea of the importance of food. Consuming the right food, quantity and following the correct method of cooking keeps you in the pink of health, otherwise you might land up falling ill. So eat healthy and be healthy.
