Most of us are unfamiliar with the term, “Gestational Diabetes.” Well, this means high blood sugar count that occurs in females during the time of pregnancy. In most cases, the blood pressure comes down to normal after the delivery.
However there might be a probability of harm to the fetus when one suffers from gestational diabetes. It is therefore, very important to regulate blood sugar during pregnancy so as to ensure the birth of a healthy baby. This makes it very important for expectant mothers to keep a check on their blood sugar by following a nutritious diet plan and performing some regular exercise. The pregnant woman should get all the essential nutrients required. So let us have a look at the diet plan that pregnant women should follow.
Gestational Diabetes Diet Plan
It is very important For a pregnant woman, to get the adequate amount of carbohydrates. It should be noted that excess carbohydrates can make the glucose level go high and cutting off carbohydrates can make her unhealthy. So one should be very careful and follow the below mentioned bulleted points:
• Avoid food that contains sucrose, fructose, dextrose, honey…etc. Never consume pastries, pies, chocolates, cakes…etc.
• Junk foods and packaged meals should be avoided. One should not take even small servings of these foods.
• Try to eat a breakfast full of proteins. It is highly advisable not to go for fruits and corns. Pastas, breads, Indian flat breads like rotis and paranthas too should be avoided.
• It would be better if you can divide your meals into small portions and have it after every 3 to 4 hours. Never take large meals and you should try to intake rich protein source like fish (skinned), eggs, cottage cheese…etc.
• Your diet should include high fibers and more green foods. You should try to consume more cereals, pulses, beans and the like in large quantities.
• You should try not to have fruits in your breakfast. Servings of fruit can be added to your lunch and dinner.
• Avoid eating foods that are deep fried and full of fats. It is better if you can avoid cooking oil. Baked fish and meat should definitely be preferred to fried food. You can always go for barbequed meat and fish. You should always avoid pork because of its high fat content.
• Always go for low fat foods and try to use low-fat milk as well.
