Four Facts about Fat

October 23, 2008

We all have come to dislike fat. This is because fat is associated with all the negative things about lifestyles. Some of these are bigger bellies, tighter pants, lower rate sex lives, diabetes and so on. But fat plays very critical roles in our system. We want to talk about some facts you don’t know about fat in this write up.

We all have fat cells
Everybody has fat cells which begin to develop even before a person is born. At the age of 16 they are fully developed. Fat cells are the body’s fuel reservoir. When you eat more calories and do not burn them they are stored as fat in the fat cells to be used another time when the body needs them. Fat cells will swell up as a result.

Fat cells produce more oestrogen.
A little more fat in you can be more dangerous than you imagine. Fat cells secret the female hormone, oestrogen, a little of which is found in men. When a man has too much fat in his system the body will produce more oestrogen to offset the male hormone testosterone. This will lead to problems like fatigue, enlarged prostate and decreased libido.

No fat at all is bad

Your body will suffer if you refuse to consume any fat at all. Fat helps in transporting vitamins in the body and also regulates cholesterol levels. Your body’s ability to use fat soluble vitamins – A, D, E, and K – is badly impaired if you don’t have any fats at all. In addition absorption of calcium becomes difficult. Production of certain hormones and the formation and clotting of blood are also impaired.

You need 30% fat
Fat should not be considered as an enemy because you need a certain amount of it in your body for it to function properly. A good diet should have at most 30% of its contents as fat. Remember however that fat is concentrated carbohydrate; it contains double the amount of calories in carbohydrates and protein. Avoid saturated fats like those found in red meat.

If you choose to eat healthy fats like fish fat and olive oil, you can live without problems with fat.
