Four Cancer Myths Unveiled
November 4, 2008
When people are afraid of something, they make a lot of stories about the thing. Some of these stories in the end are very far from the truth. The dreaded thing becomes a myth. That is the story of cancer. Because it is dreaded, it has been mystified so much that the truth about it looks like a lie. It is good to discard these myths and get the truth straight.
Breast cancer affects women only
Those who say this are deceiving themselves. Men have milk ducts around the nipples that are potentially cancerous. It is projected that about 1,500 men will be diagnosed with cancer of the breast this year. This is not a question of who is fat or skinny. Out of this number, about 500 will die. So man you aren’t out yet.
Cell phones and things like that cause cancer
It was not long ago when someone sued a cell phone company because he thought the radio waves and electromagnetic fields emitted from the phone was responsible for his brain cancer. This was widely published all over the world, making front page headlines. But a few months later, scientist found out that there is no link between cell phones and cancer. This new development was not given the necessary front page headline that the first news had. So people still think that cell phones eat brain up.
Inhaling smog is just as cancerous as smoking cigarette
People think breathing the air in busy cities like Los Angeles is just like smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. But smog is far less harmful than even passive cigarette smoking. It is proven that about 87%of lung cancer is caused by smoking cigarettes. Those married to smokers stand about 30% risk of developing cancer. Smog is not good for your health, but it cannot give you cancer.
What you do when you’re young has no link with cancer risk
Some people think once you turn your life around in later years and adopt a healthy lifestyle, your risk of cancer is overturned; what you did when you are young – the risk of the junk food, the alcohol and the smoking – will go. This is a lie. You must lead a healthy life at all times to avoid cancer. Young people can also develop cancer.
Learn the truth about cancer and live to avoid it.
