Forget about Fad Diets

October 6, 2009

improvedietIf you turn on the television, go onto the internet, or go through a magazine, you’ll see tons of advertisements for this diet or that diet. Each diet guarantees that they are “The Diet” that will help you lose lots of weight in no time at all.

All you have to do is sign up with their company, pay some money, and take a bunch of pills. Sounds too good to be true? It usually is. These types of diets are known as fad diets and are responsible for more than causing you to lose weight.

They can also cause harm to your health. If you are ready to lose weight, don’t even consider one of these fad diets. Your best bet is to lose the weight naturally.

Natural weight loss may take longer, but it is safer than being on a fad diet, and the results typically last longer, because you are making lifestyle changes.

How do you know if the diet you are on is a fad diet? There are several tell-tale signs that indicate a fad diet. Below are some examples of promises, guarantees, and do’s and don’ts that you need to follow while dealing with fad diets.

Fad diet #1

Beware of ads for diets that guarantee that you can lose a great deal of weight in a minimal period of time. For instance, “you can lose 20 pounds in just three weeks.”

Rapidly is not a safe way to lose weight. It may be possible, but it is not advisable.

Fad diet #2

A fad diet will have you eliminate a specific food group; for example, cutting all carbs from your diet, which is just not healthy. You need a selection from all of the basic food groups to create a balanced meal.

Instead of following a fad diet, why not try to lose weight in a healthy and safe manner? Health professionals have made the following suggestions to help you lose weight naturally.

1. Include fruits and vegetables in your diet. Eat whole grain cereals, breads, etc. If you are able to eat dairy items, opt for fat-free or low-fat dairy food items.

2. Make sure you get your protein. This can be achieved by eating fish, chicken, egg whites, and legumes.

3. Keep fats, cholesterol, sodium, and sugar to a minimum.

Now that you know what you should eat, here are some additional tips to help you lose weight.

1. Try exercising 30 minutes a day, 3-4 times a week.

2. Do not fill up your plate. Use smaller dinner plates. Don’t take second helpings.

3. Stay on a schedule with your meals. Never neglect eating a meal. Make sure your meals contain a variety of food groups.

4. Steer clear of sugary drinks, sweets and processed food.

5. Opt for grilled or baked meats instead of frying your food.

6. Don’t gulp down your food. Chew slowly so that you can realize when you are full.
