Monsoons and lovely spells of rain bring relief from the scorching heat of summers. But along with showers, monsoon also brings with it a plethora of food-related diseases like food poisoning, diarrhea and cholera amongst others. It thus becomes essential to pay extra care and attention to one’s eating habits to stay healthy and fit during monsoons as one’s body and digestive system is susceptible to infections during this period of the year.

Since monsoon diseases are mostly water-borne, one needs to be particularly careful about the intake of water. Having boiled and purified water is a must along with ensuring that one does not get tempted by juices, golas and kulfis of the street vendors. Monsoons provide the most suitable environment for the breeding of bacteria and thus one should avoid eating from outside, especially chaats and other spicy items from street vendors. Similarly, eating salads from outside is also unsafe as germs might thrive on them during rains thereby leading to various infections like diarrhea. Similarly foods which are watery like watermelon should also be avoided and one should also be careful of dairy products as they have maximum propensity to get infected by germs.

Instead of going in for heavy food items, one should prefer eating light and easily digestible foods like boiled potatoes or cooked vegetables. Bitter and astringent vegetables and cooling foods like barley, brown rice and oats are the best items to eat during monsoon. In addition, one should use plenty of ginger and onion in one’s food preparations. Since the digestive system generally becomes weak during monsoons, one should avoid gaseous foods like soybean, rajmah, channa and other heavy food items. Similarly, one should restrain from one’s desire of eating outside as outside food is more unsafe and unhygienic during rainy season. By following certain precautions, one can ensure one remains healthy and fit throughout the year.
