Food Myths Destroyed
The saying that you are what you eat is a very big exaggeration. A man will not become a cow if he eats a lot of beef. It is impossible for anyone to turn into a chicken just because he/she consumes a lot of chicken. Although it is true that carrots are good for the eyes, eating a ton of it a day will not give you X-ray vision. Food myths like these abound. Some of them are discussed here.
Food is better if it is cooked
This is not always true. Certain foods when they are in their raw state contain toxins that can cause harm. Some of these foods are beans and eggplants. Some vegetables like carrots contain certain nutrients that are destroyed when they are cooked. But then when they are cooked they still contain a lot of nutrients. One cannot say that raw meat or fish is better than cooked meat or fish. You only have to eat foods that must be eaten raw and eat those that should be cooked before eating as they should.
Plastic chopping boards are more hygienic
This is a lie. Some time ago, it was believed that wooden boards have microscopic pores that harbour harmful bacteria. They supposed that plastic is too smooth for bacteria to stick on to. The opposite is rather true. A research by the University of Wisconsin’s Food Research Institute indicates that bacteria rather multiply on plastic boards while they die within three minutes on wooden boards. The important thing is to clean your chopping board.
Coffee causes your blood pressure to rise
This is not wholly true. Researchers have found out that coffee raises blood pressure. But the raise is too insignificant to cause high blood pressure. The risk of hypertension comes with other things like alcohol and smoking.
You should eat three times a day
This is a myth. Eating breakfast, lunch and supper is just obeying social conventions. You have to eat when you are hungry. What is important is the content of what you are eating. It is good to eat lots of fruits and vegetables. If you keep on eating the wrong things three times a day you harm yourself.
