Food ideas for Children
March 17, 2009
As your child grows out of infancy and begins to grow teeth and shows an interest in table food, his/her palate is wide open for new taste experiences. Start the child slowly with soft foods. As children’s teeth come in and they get used to chewing and swallowing, move them onto more solid foods.
Children are not able to eat everything that adults can eat. They may not be able to tolerate spicy foods, exotic foods or tough foods that require a lot of chewing. This is because the child’s teeth are not strong enough and their digestive system is not developed enough to process the foods. Here is a list of fun, easy to eat foods that you can introduce to your child.
There are many cold foods that you can start your child off with. Soft foods such as bananas, cream cheese, yogurts, peanut butter, and pudding are easy for the child to eat and digest. Plus, they are fun for the child to play with. Try combining foods such as yogurt with fresh fruits such as apples and bananas. When you give a child an apple to eat, make sure it is cut into small pieces and the skin is peeled off so that the child does not choke on the food. Make fun sandwiches of tuna, soft meat, cheese, and chicken salad. Give them healthy whole grains to eat. Whole grain cereals and crackers are great finger foods.
When it comes to hot foods, keep them soft and simple. Some good hot foods to introduce to a small child are baked beans, macaroni and cheese, pasta, eggs, oatmeal, and pancakes. Soups are also easily digestible as long as they are not too spicy and do not contain too many large pieces of either meat or vegetables.
Encourage your child to eat fruits and vegetables. Keep them simple though. Celery may not be a good first choice and the pieces could get stuck in their throat. Try fruits that do not have any pits or seeds. Stick with tomatoes, berries, bananas, and oranges without pits. Steam those vegetables that are hard so that it is easier for the child to chew them. Cut the fruits and vegetables into small pieces.
Put a variety of foods out on the table and let your child choose which ones intrigue them. A child learns what he/she likes to eat by experiencing a variety of foods.

Great ideas and tips. I recently married a man with a young son and I am trying to get them both to eat more healthy, whole foods. I appreciate the information.
Cheers!
