Food for comfort
Opposite forces tend to attract and propel each other and are combined with each other in a symbiotic relationship. The Chinese use the philosophy of Ying and Yang to explain this.
This is applicable to eating habits too. When people start eating good healthy food, they sometimes eat junk food as a reward for their good eating and vice versa. This is a vicious, never-ending cycle.
For this purpose, individuals turn to what is called comfort foods. That is food that reminds one of their childhood and what their mother or grandmother served.
It could be made completely at home or semi homemade. It brings back fond memories of eating together as a family and sharing stories, jokes or just being together. In this hectic world with technological advances, communication happens over cell phones and internet.
This can be different for each person. For instance, you can like sandwiches and hamburgers while your brother might like meatloaf with mashed potatoes, pot roast, Mac and cheese or lasagna.
However, with the evolving demographics one may not be surprised to find that comfort foods too are changing. It could be from any type of cuisine say for instance Indian curry, Thai noodles, Mexican quesadillas, Japanese yakitori, Korean Kim chi, or Chinese dim sums.
It could also be based on the age group and gender. The younger people chose ice cream or cookies as their comfort food while the older generation opted for soups, pasta, or pizzas. People over fifty-five chose soups and mashed potatoes. Among men, the comfort food was ice creams, soup, pizza, and pasta while for women it was ice cream, chocolates and cookies.
Most chefs are opting to serve the classics with slight variations, as there seems to be a demand for the same. They also are looking to jazz up the menu by adding different fruits vegetables and different kinds of meat. This perks up even an ordinary dish. A smell or visual of a comfort food will bring in fond memories and take us to a safe and comfortable place.

Interesting! I have really never been one to turn to food for comfort. When I get sad, lonely, depressed etc. or even if I just want to reward myself I don’t think about eating to ease my emotions. I remember most of my friends though, anytime they ended a relationship or got way stressed out they would turn to food to comfort them. I always wondered why. I guess it’s because they associated food good memories. I’m not sure why food doesn’t comfort me but I guess it’s a good thing.
Thanks foe share.
