Food Craving
January 12, 2009
When the body has several signals mixed up, then the body craves for food. When we are fatigued of puritanic, we experience low blood sugar or low serotonin. Then the brain is signaled by the body that it needs something to pick up. Due to this signal, a sugar or carbohydrate craving is aroused. However, there are three main factors involved in food craving. They are imbalance in the hormones, dieting and adrenal fatigue.
Hormonal imbalance: Our basic feel good hormone is serotonin. This feel good hormone gets lowered by hormonal imbalance or weak digestion. Sugar and carbohydrates release a small portion of serotonin and we feel good; however, this feel good feeling is short termed and after some time we again start to starve for sugar and simple carbohydrates.
Dieting: Insulin in our bodies maintains the blood sugar levels by stimulating the blood cells when to absorb sugar and when not to absorb from the blood. But when one’s body gets insulin resistant, then the body stops responding towards insulin, resulting in grabbing each and every calorie it can and depositing it in the form of fat.
Therefore, one tends to gain weight even by eating the least quantity of food. Thus, a resistance toward insulin leads to obesity, diabetes and heart illness. When you go for a low fat diet, then the chances are more to suffer from this condition. This is because the cells are not able to get the amount of sugar they need and thus, they signal the brain that you want more sugar and carbohydrates, which leads to continues food craving.
So when you want to lose weight and switch to low fat food, you unknowingly make the problem more severe. It’s better to switch to a low fat and high carbohydrate diet as then you become only partially resistant to insulin. However, they can worsen your metabolic problems as dieting is itself very stressful for the body. Before going for a weight loss, one needs to improve the metabolism first.
Adrenal fatigue: Adrenal fatigue is another cause of food craving. If you are exhausted most of the time, then you are either under a great deal of stress, sleep deprivation or suffering from insomnia. This causes adrenal fatigue and so the body signals the brain that it needs a pick up. In return, you stick to sugar and carbohydrates, which fuels up the problem.
How to curb craving: You can curb your craving in many ways. Eat every 3 hours but in small quantities. Drink as much water as you can, as it will keep you fill all the time. Try to avoid craving and eat only when it’s out of control. Exercising is also good to curb the cravings. When there is a craving, opt to eat healthy snacks like fruits or raw vegetables. They will satisfy you without doing any harm.
Choose a diet which can fulfill your physical, nutritional and emotional needs.
