Fats Have A Place In Your Diet
When you talk about a good diet today, there are two things that people don’t expect you to mention. These are fats and carbohydrates, the most despised being fats. Fats were among the first kinds of foods to be considered as dangerous to our health. Later, carbohydrates joined the group.
Are there bad foods?
However, naming some kinds of food as bad and others good is just pushing things to the extremes. No food could really be considered as bad, but bad dietary choices could be made. Naturally, some foods are better for a healthy life, and choosing such food could be considered as good. Even these foods when not eaten in moderation can lead to bad consequences for our health.
The importance of fats
Fats are very important for our health. They play very vital roles in our nutrition. Eliminating them completely from our diet is both impossible and unwise. Fats are necessary for energy production and to support the carriage and absorption of fat soluble vitamins, such as vitamins D, E, and K. Fats also regulate different bodily functions.
Moderations is the key
The fact that fats are good for the body does not make too much fat good for you. Too much fat in your diet could lead to harmful effects and diseases, like stroke and certain cancers. It is recommended that you limit your daily intake of fat so that it does not go beyond 20% calories, but something lower than 10% is not good.
Types of fats
There are different kinds of fats; some being more harmful than others. Saturated fats are dangerous for your health. In additions there are trans fats. These are fats that are solid under room temperature. They are often found in highly processed foods like cakes and baked foods. There are unsaturated fats like canola and olive oils which are not harmful to your health. The best thing to do is to keep both saturate and trans fats to the very minimum.
One of the very best fats is Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish oil, such as cod liver oil. They are good oils with the ability to reverse heart disease and high levels of cholesterol.
