Exercising with heart disease

March 24, 2009

It is true that there are some discomforts associated with exercise for heart patients, but according to the American Heart Association, it is beneficial for the heart patients if they follow proper medical advice while exercising.

Exercise helps in preventing several factors that contribute to heart diseases, like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes. It plays a vital role in the prevention of various forms of heart diseases.

Guide for proper exercise

It is safe for most people to start an exercise program on their own in the house. Generally, people who have been diagnosed with a heart problem are referred to a cardiac rehabilitation program. Before starting with an exercise program, it is recommended to consult the doctor first. Your doctor will tell you the type of activity best suited to you by going through your medical history and the current health condition.

1.    One is advised to ask the doctor to give you a green signal for physical activity if one has just gone through a heart attack or heart surgery. Guidelines from the doctor are also recommended prior to an increased activity level.

2.    It is important to keep an eye on the intensity of the exercise. Keep in mind to be in the zone of your heart rate, as determined by your doctor. The rate of your heart beat during exercise should be just ten beats more than your normal beats. Ask your physician to recommend an exercise heart rate that is safe and best for you. The doctor will find this out by an exercise stress test.

3.    It is best to exercise three to four times in a week. An exercise of five to ten minutes, two or three times a day is best for those who have low fitness levels. Make sure to follow a warm up and cool down program before and after each exercise. The duration of the exercise time should be increase to 30 to 60 minutes over a period of six months. Generally, specific exercise programs, like riding a stationary cycle, are also good for the heart.

4.    Switching to physical activities also helps the heart. You can take the stairs instead of the lift. Take your dog for a walk. Play with the kids instead of just watching them, etc.

5.    If you witness any unusual signs like chest pain, extreme fatigue, etc, while exercising or after, then consult your doctor at once.

6.    Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t want to. Avoid exercising outdoors if it is too hot or humid.

It is always best to get a clearance from the doctor before starting an exercise program. Follow the guidelines given from the doctor and stay healthy.
