ExerciseDo’s and Don’ts – Continue to Get the Best from your Workout

November 21, 2008

You have been a regular exerciser for a while now. You have a routine of going to the gym, cycling, swimming or running and you consider yourself relatively fit.

Here are some do’s and don’ts to keep you on track.

Do…
Keep setting goals: regular gym exercisers often hit a slump period after a time and they lose motivation and energy. If this sounds like you, try to vary your workouts. Consider hiring a personal trainer for a weekly session to give you a different perspective. Sign up for a class at the gym to keep your workout interesting. Plan an adventure vacation that involves an activity you enjoy, like kayaking, surfing or rock climbing.

Breathe: try to make your inhaling and exhaling the same length. Count in..2..3, out..2..3. Inhale deeply and exhale completely. Concentrate on your breathing.

Eat a balanced diet: you need to feed your body with the right fuel if it is to perform at its optimum level. This does not mean you should eat like a professional athlete. Those sugar-laden sports drinks and energy bars will only end up on your waistline. Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables.

Enjoy yourself: working out isn’t supposed to be a chore, it is meant to be enjoyable. If you find that the fun factor is missing, do something different for a while. Swap running for swimming; power walk instead of running; play a team sport – anything to vary your routine and get the fun back. Try to lighten your attitude to your fitness – why did you start in the first place? Get back to basics and start to enjoy your exercise again.

Don’t…
Avoid exercises you don’t like: as you become more experienced, there will some exercise or machines that you prefer not to use and you tend to avoid them. However, to get a balanced workout and strengthen and work all muscles, you need to do those things you hate. Introduce them gradually into your routine, and make sure you do those 2 or 3 times a week.

Become a fanatic: being fanatical implies an overzealous approach. It is good to be commited to your fitness regime, but allow yourself to have some fun too. A good way of achieving this is to regularly workout with someone who has a more leisurely approach. This allows your muscles to repair and strengthen before your next session.

Skimp on footwear: your feet are important to your over-all health and you need to look after them. Choose shoes for their function not for their fashion. Go to a specialist sport shoe store and be properly fitted by a professional. Shoes worn regularly are going to need replacing after three or four months because the support and cushioning will have started to deteriorate.
