Exercise-another excellent way to combat anxiety

February 24, 2009

All of us experience anxiety in one way or the other. It is an emotion no one can ever escape. Anxiety happens when we have a feeling of distress and uneasiness. When we get anxious, we start worrying and become fearful. The heart starts beating rapidly and we sweat. Our behaviour also changes – for example we starting tapping our feet on the floor or bite our nails. All this only adds to our feelings of distress. Anxiety is useful to us as a warning sign, but as we all know, too much of anything is bad for us. Too much anxiety can restrict our abilities.

Besides the normal anxiety which we all experience, there is a higher mental problem known as GAD (generalized anxiety disorder). GAD is a chronic feeling of extreme worries and tensions. People with this psychiatric problem witness physical symptoms like trembling, headache, sweating, diarrhoea, twitching, breathlessness, lightheadedness, etc. People with this problem seem to worry unnecessarily and are always in fear of disasters.

However, this level of anxiety is not in the control of the sufferer. The person can not lower the level even when knowing that it’s more than is needed. The experience of this emotion is not by choice and can not be controlled without outside help. Treatments like medication, therapies, and relaxation techniques can be helpful in the treatment of GAD.

Exercise has a positive and stabilizing effect on the various moods and feelings of the sufferer, because of chemicals released in the body.  Regular exercise and physical activity can help in lowering the level of anxiety. Exercise helps to increase self control which helps in controlling anxiety as it diverts the mind from stress. The adrenaline levels can be reduced if one is in good physical shape. Even if one is feeling anxious, with lower adrenaline levels, there are less physical changes.

30 to 40 minutes of Aerobics, brisk walking, swimming, jogging, cycling, tennis, etc, are effective in achieving the goal. These and other exercises help in generating certain chemicals in the body which make the person relax and feel good in a healthy and natural way. Regular physical activity also helps in reducing the frequency of panic attacks. In extreme cases exercise may only be of limited use, and medication and other therapies may also be needed to help fight extreme levels of anxiety.
