Exercise Addiction

It may sound unreal to you, but it is true. However, the number of people who do not exercise is far larger than those who are addicted to it.

Initially, physiologists had the idea that people could become addicted to exercise. The reason would be the release of endorphins. These are chemicals that act similar to narcotics. With an increase in physical activity, endorphins go higher. This was the basis of their belief that release of endorphins might be the reason behind people being addicted to exercise.

Intense workouts like weight lifting or running on a treadmill can make the levels of endorphins go up. Endorphins help to overcome the physical discomfort associated with straining yourself. However, most people do not get addicted to endorphins.

The addiction

If you are addicted to exercising then you might not be able to give up training. The more you exercise the more you want to exercise. You can actually become consumed with exercising. For exercise to be considered an addiction, it has to disrupt normal interactions at home or work.

When you exercise, you burn calories and your muscles, joints and bones and tissues work hard. As a result, you need to refuel your body to go on. You also need to rest so that your body can recover and the muscles and tissues can repair themselves.

Failure to do so will result in injuries and weakening of the tissues. However, injuries are not enough to stop exercise addicts to stop exercising. They will still look to increase the intensity and length of their workouts.

When should you stop?

Exercise is good for your health and it also helps to stay away from a majority of diseases. However, when done without limits, it can become the cause of concern and injury for the person involved.

You may be addicted to exercise if you find yourself pushing everything including your family, friends and other responsibilities away, while prioritising exercise above everything else.

Exercise addiction may be the result of something much deeper than simply the love of endorphins. It can be because of problems like obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression and other emotional problems. In such cases, it is best to seek the help of a professional.

If you think that pain is a part of the fun of exercising, then you need to think about your chances of exercise addiction. You should also be concerned if you find your closet full of athletic shoes and your medicine cabinet having ibuprofen, naprosyn, Bengay and horse liniment.
