Evening Workout Safety Tips

Long summer evenings when the heat of the day has gone, may seem like the ideal time of day to go for a run or a walk. Statistics have shown that summer brings an increase in crime, so take note of these tips to protect yourself when you go for an evening workout.

•   Safety in numbers: don’t be tempted to go out alone at night.You might think you are OK, but is it worth taking a risk? Find a workout buddy and keep together; but more is better when it comes to working out at night. Form a group for your summer workouts – an attacker is much less likely to bother a group than a single or a pair. It is also more fun to walk or run with a group and hang out together.

•    Tell someone where you are going: make sure someone knows the route you intend to take and the approximate time you will be gone. If you are late returning, they know where to start looking.

•    Keep to main roads: it is much safer if you stay in populated areas, on wide streets that are well-lit. Areas where are there are lit shop windows or late-opening stores that are open, are especially good. Keep away from poorly lit parks, narrow streets and alleys. Be on the lookout for places where an attacker can be hidden from view.

•    Be armed: the usual self defence weapons of pepper spray and alarms can be ineffective in night time attacks. The pepper spray could be turned back on you; an alarm is easily ignored or silenced. Carry your keys or a ballpoint pen with you – these can be used to attack the eyes or throat of an assailant.

•    Keep alert: allow no distractions to interfere with your awareness of what is going on around you. Leave the ipod and headset at home, remain alert, look around you as you run and be more aware of your surroundings than your workout.

•    Listen to your inner feelings: trust your gut feelings and if something or someone doesn’t feel or look right, get to safety without delay. If you follow a well-lit and populated area, there should be several safety spots to head for.

It is so much better to take a few easy precautions when you workout at night, than risk being the victim of an attack. You don’t need to be paranoid, just prepared.
