There is development of a new technique of freezing damaged cells in the esophagus so that they do not turn cancerous. This method is being adopted by gastroenterologists at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas for treatment of patients.

An ailment known as Barrett’s esophagus is result of prolonged heartburn during which stomach acid constantly goes to the esophagus. The condition when left untreated rises to become Barrett’s with dysplasia, in which cells start altering. The damage of the esophageal cells due to stomach acid may lead to elevated risk of developing esophagus cancer. The aim of this new method or therapy is to immobilize or halt the injury in its tracks and freeze it before it turns to cancer.

The treatment is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The treatment is based on a special catheter, used to spray liquid nitrogen on the injured tissue to freeze the lining of the esophagus. The treated tissue is drained away aiding normal cells to grow and substitute the damaged cells in approximately six to eight weeks time.

The treatment for Barrett’s esophagus with dysplasia includes mucosal resection. It is based on scraping away the injured oesophagel lining. It is a time taking procedure and can be hours long. It has side effects such as blood loss or tapering of the esophagus. Sometimes patients undergo surgery to remove the damaged sections of the esophagus. But in some cases patients are too ill or aged for surgery and want some other suitable therapy.

This ailment is more common in older patients who also suffer other health problems, in that case so the decision of surgery requires very careful treatment. Cryoablation therapy is recommended for older patients who may have some other health complications such as heart or lung diseases.
