Enjoy Holidays Without Weight Gain
April 24, 2009
portion of the population gains weight during the holiday season. Were it not true, one wouldn’t see such a wide display and sale of edible goods during that season.
If you too gain weight around the holidays, and have to exercise that much harder later on, the following are some ways to keep that extra weight at bay.
Focus on relationships
It’s nice and important to be a part of the social scene during festivities. But too often social interaction boils down to just eating and drinking together rather than spending quality time with loved ones.
It’s natural to be tempted by dishes only made on these special occasions, but you should restrict yourself to smaller helpings or fewer dishes.
Eat to be full, not to be the fullest
Yes, you love to celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year, as they are once a year affairs. But you are overlooking the days in-between that make it the holiday season.
It’s also a great season for tasty leftovers which are distracting and lead you to indulgence.
It is up to you to decide whether the food would be worthwhile, whether you should really have that extra helping of cake or stuffed turkey that you may not have again until the following Christmas. In those moments, it takes extra effort to say no.
Be choosey
During the season it’s difficult to refuse any invitation, generally for social reasons. Perhaps you can’t skip that office party or say not to that old friend of yours. But somewhere along the line you have to cut down on the number of parties you attend or the food you eat. Why not plan it out beforehand? At the end of the day you may be able to have your cake and eat it too!
Remain focused
When you think about it, even the holiday season has its holidays. Think of those short gaps between Thanksgiving and Christmas and again between Christmas and the New Year.
Enjoy those breaks in various ways, keeping your goals in mind. You can always exercise the option of limiting the size and number of helpings.
Continue to remain positive
With all those celebrations going around and tempting dishes it is very easy to give up on your resolutions and indulge yourself. Keep reminding yourself of the goals you have set and you will be able to achieve them with little effort.
