Everyone knows that nicotine is associated with various health hazards and nicotine is supplied to the body not only through smoking or sniffing but also through chewing tobacco. The high content level of nicotine in tobacco makes it addictive thereby leading to long term health problems. The major health risk associated with tobacco intake is the high risk for the development of lung cancer. It has been found that nicotine intake contributes to almost 90% of lung cancer cases and tobacco smoked through pipes and cigars can increase one’s risk of oral and laryngeal cancer. In addition to cancers, tobacco chewing can also lead to various stomach diseases as its influence extends to both mucous membrane and muscular layers of the stomach thereby leading to stomach irritation along with the problems of heartburns, nausea and general discomfort and irritation. Moreover, it affects all the vital organs of the body including the heart and the nervous system. The harmful chemicals present in tobacco also produce drowsiness, unsteady movements of the heart and even convulsive movements of the muscles.
Chewing of tobacco can also lead to the early eroding and decay of teeth, bad breath and general unhygienic and unhealthy conditions of the body. It also leads to discoloring of lips which can lead to lip cancer over a period of time. Sore throat, rashes, burning sensation on lips and tongue and others are all symptoms as well as side effects of tobacco chewing. Thus one should stop this addiction of tobacco as soon as possible to keep one’s body healthy and fit.
