Eating Out of Guilt
Many people don’t realize it, but guilt is linked to overeating. If someone stops their diet or they eat something that was prohibited while they were on their diet, then they may overeat as a result of the guilt that they are experiencing.
This is because they feel that they failed at their weight loss program. People are under the assumption that if they make themselves feel guilty, they will stop eating the wrong foods and will get back to their diet.
But if you have found yourself in this situation, think about it for a minute. Has this thought ever worked for you? When you feel guilty do you stop eating or do you, like most people, react by overeating and repeating poor eating habits?
Studies show that people who feel guilty for not following a diet actually wind up repeating their poor diet habits and as a result, overeat.
The reason being, when people feel that they have messed up on a diet, they start thinking about what they “should, could or would have” done differently to help them stay on their diet track. As a result guilt sets in and it becomes the main focus. The guilt will make you feel uncomfortable.
The feeling of discomfort can lead to strong emotions, which will in turn trigger a person to eat more to deal with the emotional issues they have now brought upon themselves.
Have you ever noticed that you seem to feel calmer after you eat? More so if the food is high in carbohydrates or sugar. The reason is that foods such as these can cause the brain to feel calmer.
So here’s how the whole process runs from beginning to end….
You break your diet or eat something wrong. As a result you begin to overeat. Since overeating is exactly what you didn’t want to do, you begin to feel guilty about it.
You try to push the guilty feelings aside, but this makes you feel uncomfortable. To relieve the discomfort you turn to food, to trigger your brain into making you believe that you are feeling better. And so the cycle goes on.
Stop the cycle of guilt and overeating by rationally telling yourself that just because you ate something “forbidden” on your diet, you are not going to make a habit out of it and it doesn’t mean that your whole diet is worthless.
