Eating and Drinking Right
July 24, 2009
It is not always necessary to follow a diet to remain healthy. You can eat good food and still be fit and healthy and importantly develop your brain. It is general knowledge that fruits and vegetables are healthy. There are other food items too that help nurture brain development.
A study was undertaken among two thousand people between the age of seventy and seventy-four who are on a consistent diet of chocolates, tea, and wine.
A cognitive was done for this group and a group that did not follow this diet. It was found that the group having chocolates, tea, and wine fared better in the tests relating to memory power, learning etc.
Chocolates: Chocolates should be eaten in moderation and you should not eat just chocolates because it is beneficial. Chocolates high in cocoa content are good especially dark chocolates. One small square piece of chocolate i.e. about ten grams everyday is good for your health.
Tea: Tea is said to be good for the health. A survey done among a group that drinks tea and another that doesn’t drink tea shows that the group drinking tea are more alert and smart.
However, the study does not distinguish black or green tea though it is perceived that green tea might have a slight advantage. In addition to flavonoids, green tea has catechins, which help your cognitive development.
Wine: This is said to have the best influence on development and working of your brain. Here again the quantity is minimal. Half a glass a day of wine has the maximum effect.
More than that and it loses its potency. A maximum of one to two glasses may not do any major damage. Though red wine is preferred as it is good for general health even white wine is good for cognitive performance. Studies indicate that wine consumption improves cardiovascular function and that in turn helps your neurovascular functioning.
It is however unclear as to the duration for which this has to be practiced. An early start helps. Also one cannot be absolutely certain that all of the above will help your brain but studies have shown that those who do this show a difference. Hence include wine, tea, and chocolates in your diet.
