Eat 6 Meals A Day And Loose Weight
December 12, 2008
This is a relatively unknown and uncommon practise of losing weight.
The practice
It is a well known proverb; “Have breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and supper like a pauper.” The 3 meals a day practice has been largely advertised and propagated.
However, things are slightly changing these days. Experts in this field say that our body can absorb nutrients better if given in small proportions over a period. Leslie Bonci, R.D. Director of sports nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre, says that you can eat the same amount of calories during the day, but if you do so over several smaller meals, then your body burns 10% more calories.
The Findings
St. Michael’s Hospital in Ontario, Canada made some observations. They had two groups of individuals; one of which took the 3 meals a day whereas the second one took several smaller meals throughout the day. Let us call the first group, ‘gorgers’ and the second group ‘nibblers’.
Findings showed that the gorgers had considerably higher levels of low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which is the more harmful type.
The University of Limburg in the Netherlands made similar findings. They found that the nibblers were less prone to gain weight because their carbohydrate and fat oxidization levels were much more stable.
The advantages
Our stomach is not capable of handling large portions of calories, carbs in one go. If the proportion is small then, it can work more efficiently and can burn the calories faster. As a result, loosing weight becomes easier.
As already stated, it also helps to lower the bad cholesterol in blood, which makes it even healthier.
The perfect diet
It is already clear now how the mini meal diet is useful for our health. Here are some tips that you can easily follow to adopt this diet.
Dividing the meal
More meals do not mean more food. This is something that you should be very clear with in the first place. To start with, you should know that all that an average male requires per day is 2500 calories. So you can divide it up into six meals for the day. You should remember however, that each serving should contain 50g of carbohydrates, 25g protein and 8g of fat. That should get you started.
Be innovative
It is important that you prepare meals that you can eat in more than one sitting. Our classic meals lack this ability. For example, the standard steak and mashed potato meal would not allow you to eat it in parts, unless you would have the potatoes later on, which of course is not an option.
Meals that can be eaten and then stored to be eaten again are ideal if you want to follow this diet. Some examples of such meals are lasagne, spaghetti and Chinese-style rice.
Be practical
If you want to follow this diet, you will have to make some adjustments. You can make meals that are easier to carry in Tupperware so that it is convenient for you to consume them at your own time.
Be considerate
Remember, if you have never tried this before, then chances are that your stomach may not respond as you want it to. Don’t worry and give it some time to adjust.
If it growls a lot, then keep drinking lots of water.
But remember that if you go on with this, it will adjust and you will start to loose weight and feel healthier. So do not give up and keep at it for you surely will succeed.
