Drugs For Weight Loss – How Effective?
Being overweight is unhealthy and leads to a lot of medical problems. So it is necessary to lose weight. Try to lose weight through proper diet and consistent exercise, rather than using drugs for weight loss. But weight-loss drugs might help, if you have a medical problem.
Let’s take a look at some of these drugs:
Drugs which flush water out of the body:
These drugs, known as Diuretics, help you to lose excess water from your body, and not the fat. But they should be avoided as they also deprive sodium and potassium from the body. But if you have a specific disorder, like fuel retention, then you can use them.
Drugs which raise levels of thyroid:
These drugs are only taken by people who are obese as they have low thyroid levels. It is not advisable for healthy people to take it, because it has to be consumed in large quantities, which might later have an adverse effect.
Drugs that depress the appetite:
These drugs are also known as anorectics meaning loss of appetite. They contain amphetamines which increase metabolic rate and reduce appetite. Sometimes small doses might not be enough to suppress your appetite, so you might have to consume large quantities, which increase the heart rate and blood pressure.
Drugs which temporarily raise the metabolic rate:
These drugs, known as thermogenics, increase the temperature of the body to burn more fat. They are to be avoided by people who have heart related problems.
Drugs which produce a feeling of fullness:
These drugs, known as bulking agents, when consumed, swell in the stomach, giving you a feeling of fullness. But they might cause diarrhea. So instead of these drugs, it is better to consume bran, whole grains, fruits or vegetables, which gives you the same effect.
Drugs that prevent calories from being absorbed by the intestines:
They contain “starch blockers”, which help to lose weight, but have side effects like vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, etc.
Drugs that help your body to burn fuel more efficiently:
These drugs contain chromium, which reduces body fat and preserves the muscles.
But always consult a doctor before you go in for these drugs. Drugs alone won’t help. A consistent diet and exercise is also necessary.
