Drinking Water to Maintain Good Health
Drinking plenty of water is essential to maintain good health. One should drink water as much as possible.
Our body is about 60 to 70 percent water. Blood contains mostly water, and our organs such as muscles, lungs, and brain, kidneys, etc. contain high percentage of water. Water is required to regulate body temperature and is the medium for nutrients transportation to the organs. Water is also the carrier of oxygen to our cells. It eliminates waste, and protects our bone joints and other organs.
Body looses enough water through urination, respiration, and sweating. Active people require more water than those who are sedentary. Some medication pills and alcohol result in more requirement of water. Dehydration of body include symptoms such as chronic pains in joints and muscles, lower back pain, headaches and constipation. A yellow or amber color of urine indicates lack of water consumption.
An accurate estimation of water intake is to take your body weight and divide that number in half. This indicates the number of ounces of water per day required by your body. If you exercise, you should drink more water depending on the duration of exercise. Intake of alcohol should be accompanied with lots of water If you are traveling on an airplane you should drink eight ounces of water every hour in the plane. An arid climate demands more consumption of water per day.
Twenty percent of the water requirement comes from the foods we eat. The rest of the body demand should be met from the beverages you drink. Water is the best choice. Aerated cold drinks have a lot of sugar, so you may take in more calories than you need. Teas that are not diuretic are good for health.
