Does Apple Cider Vinegar Really Help You Lose Weight

June 11, 2009

apple-ciderPeople have used apple cider vinegar over the centuries to aid in weight loss. In ancient Egypt, people believed that by consuming large amounts of vinegar, the body would be able to absorb fats and oils more easily therefore reducing weight gain. Back then in Egypt, drinking vinegar to lose weight was the top weight loss plan.

There are still products being sold today that follow this ancient Egyptian belief. People still believe that vinegar will absorb oil in the body. They base this decision on the fact that when oil and vinegar are added to a salad, they do not combine well.

After observing this, people believe that by consuming vinegar and having high levels of vinegar in the body the vinegar would prevent any oil in the body from converting into fat.

Present day scientific research has not proven such a theory. In fact, studies have not found a link between drinking apple cider vinegar and weight loss. On the converse, apple cider vinegar does not increase a person’s weight gain.

Apple cider vinegar can affect your weight loss in one key way. If you drink apple cider vinegar under the assumption that it will stop you from gaining weight no matter what you eat, and then you will eat whatever you want and in fact, see weight gain.

While there is no specific problem with apple vinegar, there is a problem with the falsehoods, which are linked with it in regards to weight loss. Many retailers sell apple cider vinegar with the false promise that it will help the consumer lose weight.

There are several websites that promise you will lose weight if you just have a couple of teaspoons a day. They claim that by consuming a little apple cider vinegar each day your body will be able to burn calories throughout the day.

While the apple cider vinegar will not hurt your body, science has not proven that it will burn calories all day.

In most cases, the benefits of apple cider vinegar are similar to the benefits of eating fruit. If you read into what the sellers of apple cider vinegar are really saying you will see that they claim that on its own, apple cider vinegar will not help you lose weight.

But that coupled with exercise and a proper diet, it may work. Therefore, do not go out and buy bottles of apple cider vinegar with the hopes of losing weight. Instead, wait for scientific research to prove this theory to be true.
