Diverticulitis and Diet

October 18, 2008

Diverticular disease is a troubled condition of digestive system. It is said to be the result of highly refined diet, which is insufficient in required amounts of fiber, particularly soluble fiber. Characteristic treatment for the disease is done incorporating a high fibrous food in diet. Some pain medications are given to relieve symptoms in most of the cases. Sometimes the onset of attack of diverticular disease has to be treated with surgery.

Increasing the quantity of fibrous food in the diet may pacify the symptoms of diverticulosis. It also aids in preventing further complications. The complicated state is termed as diverticulitis. Fibers help by keeping the stools soft and reduce pressure inside the colon and facilitate the bowel movements easily. The American Dietetic Association advise intake of 20 to 35 grams of fiber daily. Out of which at least 6-8 grams should be soluble fiber.

There are some Higher Fiber Diet Foods that can be easily included in the diet.
Fruits such as apple, peach, pear tangerine etc are very rich in fiber. Vegetables such as acorn squash, asparagus, broccoli, Brussels, sprouts, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, romaine lettuce spinach, tomato, zucchini are good to consume. Starchy Vegetables such as black peas, lima beans, kidney beans, and potato are also very helpful. Grains such as breads of whole-wheat, brown rice, cereals, bran flake, oatmeal, and white rice are also fibrous in nature.

Anyone suffering from diverticulus should also increase fluid intake as much as possible. It is so because the insoluble fiber requires fluid to form softer stools that pass without pain.

Fiber Supplements and fiber products are also recommended, such as Citrucel or Metamucil. These products are consumed by mixing with water. It can supply about 2 to 3.5 grams of fiber per tablespoon consumed. Each tablespoon is to be mixed with 8 ounces of water.
