Dietary Problem

There are some aged individuals who come across dietary problems. It is difficult for them to choose, buy, cook, digest, absorb, thus, not able to utilize food. This kind of lack of ability to eat an adequate daily diet increases the risk of medical, physical and functional problems amongst elderly population.

So, it becomes essential to help them to correct any dietary problems. Some of such dietary problems and interventions to help the elderly people are like difficulty in chewing or swallowing, digesting, shopping and purchasing, cooking and also financial problems.

For elderly people, more fruit and vegetable juices, eggs, milk recipes, cheese, and yogurt, properly cooked cereals, soft meat, soft canned fruits, mashed vegetables should be chosen. The difficult to chew food should be chopped, steamed, or grated to make easier to eat.

To ease the digestion process, select mostly juices, fiber rich fruits and vegetables, non-gas forming vegetables rather than gaseous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, peas, egg plants etc. Digesting milk is also a problem in some aged people. It is better to use dairy products like yogurt. If milk is not digestible, a daily calcium supplement can be recommended.

It is convenient for elderly people to get the home delivery. They can order by phone to the stores that deliver in the area. The family and neighbors can help by providing contact numbers.

Microwave is a better option to cook. The cooked food can be cold stored for further usage. There are some appetite difficulties in some elderly individuals. In such cases, the flavor of food can be enhanced by adding spices and herbs, lemon juice, or meat sauces. Financial difficulty is another barrier to expensive healthy eating in elderly retired individuals. Shopping can be made easier and savvier by using coupons, unit pricing, and shopping lists.
