These supplements are composed of insoluble fiber and soluble fiber. Therefore, before buying a dietary fiber supplement, always make sure that it includes both these components.

Insoluble Fiber

As the name suggests, insoluble fiber cannot be dissolved in water. Its purpose is to add solid particles to stools, which makes it heavy. This way, the process of digestion is sped up. You can find out if there are insoluble fibers in your dietary fiber supplements by checking to see if it dissolves in water.

Brown rice, whole grains, amaranth, and buckwheat are just some examples of the types of food that have insoluble fiber. Even things like sesame seed and nuts also have considerable amounts of insoluble fiber.

One can gain many benefits by ensuring their diet is full of insoluble fiber. It is good for those with colon cancer as well as constipation. Even weight loss can sometimes be achieved by taking insoluble fiber.

However, one should never increase the amount of fiber in their diet by a large amount as this could cause stomach cramps, bloating, and gas. The recommended dosage of fiber a day is between 10g and 18g.

Soluble Fiber

Not only does soluble fiber manage to accomplish everything that insoluble fiber does, it also helps to reduce cholesterol, stabilizes blood sugar, and gives the person the feeling that they are full.

Therefore, it can also help with weight loss. Soluble fiber can be obtained by natural foods like oranges, bananas, apples, cereal, oats, and dried beans. However, those who feel that they are not getting enough soluble fiber can always take a dietary fiber supplement.

Supplements like psyllium and Metamucil are known to have soluble fiber. The recommended dosage of soluble fiber is comparable to that of insoluble fiber. However, as with any sort of supplement or drug, it is always best to consult your physician before taking them in order to avoid complications.
