Everybody has become aware on some level or another about the benefits of losing weight and getting fitter. However, so much information is out there that some misconceptions and myths are bound to surface.

Before you start to diet, you should be aware of what the myths are so that you can stay clear of them. Here are some myths that are commonly prevalent.

Make a drastic calorie cut and lose weight

If you reduce the number of calories drastically, then your body will go into starvation mode, so that whatever little calories you put in will get stored as fat.

Strict diets are the ones that work

This is a myth and it will not be healthy or effective. The diet will be very restrictive and soon you will grow tired of it and when you return to your normal lifestyle, you will regain whatever weight you had lost.

I should do away with all of my most favourite, yet not-so-healthy foods.

You should treat yourself now and again with your favourite foods so that you remain motivated and not let yourself get tempted into bingeing. However, eat the treat in moderation.

Eat late and gain weight

The time of your eating actually does not matter. Only how much you eat surely matters.

Do not eat in between meals

You should help yourself with some small healthy snacks between meals. This will keep your metabolism going and you will burn more calories. However, keep the snacks to healthy foods and this will also prevent you from overeating at meals.

All fat is your enemy

You do need to allow some fat in your food. Some fats are essential and even good for your health.

Skip meals and lose weight

This can actually cause your weight to increase. If you skip a meal, you are more likely to overeat at your next meal. So beware.

Say no-no to dairy

You need dairy to supplement your body with necessary calcium. You can go for healthy alternatives like low-fat or non-fat.

It depends only on your willpower

It is more than your willpower alone, it depends on your weight, culture, genetics, environment and level of activity, as well as some health concerns.

Drink water to lose weight

Water by itself will cause no weight loss. However, it is a part of any healthy diet.
