Diet for Smokers

August 4, 2008

With smoking being considered as a mark of style and image, more and more youngsters are indulging in this unhealthy activity which can easily shorten up one’s life. This act of false valor can lead to various infections and ailments of lungs and heart and can throw one’s happy and healthy life into the dark abyss of various ailments. While the best way to regain back your health is by quitting this unhealthy habit, many people who are badly addicted to it can follow a change in their diet to lessen the harmful effects of smoking.

While a die cannot stop the damage that the harmful chemicals of smoking do to one body, it can help to reduce the effect or delay it’s harmful and life snatching side-effects on the body. People who smoke are susceptible to respiratory and heart problems and thus, their diet needs extra care and attention to prevent the shadows of diseases on their lives. Since smokers are at a higher risk of problems like hypertension, atherosclerosis and numerous cancers, they need much more nutrients in their diet to delay the damage which can be done to the body.

Smokers need to increase their intake of antioxidants in the body which is required to neutralize the level of cancer-causing free radicals which get increased in the body due to tobacco smoking. The main antioxidant vitamins are Vitamin C and E and other phytochemicals like bioflavonoids and carotenoids. Thus, one should increase one’s intake of green, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables, green tea, wheat germ oil and Brazil nuts. In addition, they should also increase their intake of Vitamin C as smoking leads to a reduction of this vitamin in the body which is required for the healthy functioning of the system. One should also increase one’s intake of garlic and onion due to their antioxidant, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.

In addition to the given recommendations of diet, one should also reduce fat from one’s diet and instead indulge in eating healthy carbohydrates and low-fat protein like fish and lean chickens. While this can help in reducing the harmful effect of smoking, diet alone cannot help to prevent and safeguard your body from these side-effects. Thus, along with consuming a healthy diet, one should take measures to quit the harmful habit of smoking.
