Diet for Smokers

March 3, 2009

It used to be that smoking was considered sexy, glamorous and authoritative.  You could find smokers on the movie screen, in television commercials and billboards.  Restaurants, movie theaters and even air planes were once smoker friendly. But as city ordinances banning smoking are pushing smokers out of the buildings, away from the entranced of buildings and essentially, into the middle of the street, smokers are starting to look at their habit in a new way.  Not to mention that the cost of a pack of cigarettes has gone up increasingly over the years.  At this point, your morning cup of coffee and a pack of cigarettes could cost as much as ten dollars.

Smokers feel the effects of smoking while they smoke.  When they quit smoking, the damage done to their bodies is even more apparent.  Smokers are bothered with cardiovascular and respiratory problems.  In addition, cigarettes contain additives that have free radicals.  These additives are known to cause cancer.  Smoking also lowers the amount of vitamins and minerals your body takes in and maintains.  Smokers have lower levels of Vitamins C and E.

Smokers who are not quite ready to quit often wonder if there are diets that can be followed to reduce the amount of damage that smoking does to a body.  The answer is, no.  There is no perfect diet out there to reverse the damage of smoking.  But there are certain foods and beverages that can be consumed to help balance a smoker’s body.  Following are some suggestions.

Fruits and vegetables are important to any diet.  Smokers should consume three to four servings daily of dark green, red, orange, or yellow fruits and vegetables.  Add soy products to your diet in addition to eating lean, high protein meats such as fish, chicken and turkey.  Garlic and onions should also be added to your diet.  Drink strong tasting fruit juices such as cranberry, grapefruit, lemon, and orange juice.  Replace coffee with tea.

Exercise is essential to any diet plan.  They go hand-in-hand.  While it may be hard to perform some exercises if you are experiencing respiratory problems, find an exercise routine that you can do and follow it for thirty minutes every day.  Yoga is a great low impact workout that focuses on proper breathing techniques.  Diet and exercise will help you become healthier but the only way to really gain your health back is to quit smoking.
