Diet for a healthy heart
Heart disease is one of the number one health issues in America today. We are all trying to find ways to eat better for a healthy heart and exercise as well. There are many different things that you can eat and ways to change your diet for a healthier lifestyle.
Saturated fats are not good for our heart. They actually build up inside our arteries and raise our cholesterol level. You will find this in many snack foods as well as butter, whole milk and cream. It is important to take care when cooking with these products. You will know if there is a great amount of saturated fat in certain products by the firmness.
Monounsaturated fats actually help to reduce your cholesterol blood level and raise the good cholesterol or the levels of HDL. Excellent cooking products for this are olive oil and canola oil. You can even use these as a salad dressing. It is important to know that you do not need to use too much of this when you are cooking.
Another way to eat your way to a healthier heart is to increase your fiber. You can do this by increasing the amount of veggies that you eat as well as fruits and grains. This will help to lower you cholesterol blood level. You will also lower your chances of heart disease. Omega -3 fatty acids are also essential to your diet. This decreases your risk of heart disease as well. Salmon, albacore and sardines are excellent choices.
Eat more veggies with your meal of poultry. This way you can fill up on the good stuff. Dark green leafy veggies are the best. You also want to use butters and other spreads that have low cholesterol. Nuts are also a great addition to your diet. Use them on your salads or even in your yogurt. And lastly, go with low-fat dairy products. Cheese that is low fat or skimmed milk is a great way to go. All of these ideas are easy and will help to give you a healthy heart and a healthy lifestyle as well.
