Diet Containing Too Much Sugar Can Quickly Cause Weight Gain
You can consume just about anything and still remain healthy, provided you take it in recommended amounts. The simplest form of carbohydrates is sugars. You can get them naturally as lactose in milk, fructose in fruits or even in refined form as sucrose in table sugar.
Starchy and sweet foods, including fruits, increase your blood sugar level quickly. When you consume them rapidly, a hormone called insulin is released. This hormone works towards storing the excess sugar in the form of fat for future use. This will result in weight gain.
Consumption of sugar has increased so that people are consuming more sugar now than ever before. Consuming sugar gives you an instant boost of energy and then a low follows. This leaves you craving for more.
Here are some tips that you can follow to reduce the sugar intake in your diet.
Snack on fresh fruits instead of processed, high sugar foods.
Natural sugars provide fuel and energy for your body. Fruits and vegetables will not only satisfy your body with the required sugar, but it will also provide fiber and other nutrients that will energise your body.
Avoid adding extra sugar to cereal, coffee and other foods
Instead of adding extra sugar, you can add fruits or nuts to your cereals, which will add taste and more nutrition to your breakfast. Caffeine stimulates the pancreas. As a result, more insulin is produced and the body craves for more sugar.
Always prefer the sugar-free or low-sugar versions of soft drinks or packaged foods.
Studies indicate that people take in 500-1000 calories everyday in the form of soft drinks alone. This might answer the reason for so many obese people today. Super sized desserts and shakes add unnecessary calories to your diet resulting in unwanted weight gain. Taking the sugar-free version of your favourite treat will satisfy your sweet tooth, while also keeping your calorie meter low.
Read the labels carefully
You can read labels to ensure that the food you are eating is healthy and nutritious. Make sure you read the nutritional information carefully. The labels nowadays are a lot less deceptive than they used to be. Therefore, make use of the information while making a choice of your food.
