Diet and exercise during the holidays

June 3, 2009

dietandexerciseDuring the holiday season diets, it becomes difficult to maintain a balance between diet and working out. It is important that you don’t slacken, as it would be difficult to start all over again post holidays. Here are some things to keep in mind.

Diets influencing workouts: In the holiday season one tends to exercise more to burn all the extra calories. Overeating leads to working harder at the gym to lose those additional calories.

In the long run, this is not good for your health as you might end up straining your muscles, injuring yourself, or facing a burn out. At times, you might not be able to visit, the gym or your work out may not be adequate to lose the calories, and you could put on extra weight.

Balancing diet and workout: Moderation should be the key mantra during the holiday season. Plan a diet that ensures you can maintain your required protein and carbohydrate intake while at the same time allowing you to indulge in your favorite items. By this, you can maintain your muscle mass.

Schedule your workout: As far as possible try to workout after a heavy meal when you have consumed a lot of carbohydrates if your schedule permits it.

Working out before a meal builds lean muscle and fat moves towards muscles immediately after a meal. This ensures that you need not be selective about food. At the same time, eating very fatty meals after a workout is not very healthy.

Taking a break: The other option you have is to schedule a break from your workout during the holiday season. This is probably the best option as you can eat in peace and once the New Year is in, get back to your routine with renewed gusto.

It is difficult to maintain a routine during the holiday season and it is essential to recognize and accept it to save you from any unnecessary stress.

Plan new workouts for the holiday season, which is not as difficult to follow, and as far as possible eat nutritious food and balance your diet and exercise.
