Diabetes: Some Important Facts
November 4, 2008
Diabetes is a common disease. We all hear about it very often, but we don’t know what it actually is. Men don’t know how serious diabetes could be for them. It is the leading cause of impotence in young men today.
What is diabetes after all?
It is a condition in which the body is unable to absorb the glucose produced after digestion. This is because the hormone called insulin which helps in the process of absorption is either not there or the body is resistant to it. For that matter there are two types of diabetes: type1 and type2.
Type1 diabetes occurs when the body cannot produce insulin. It is common among children. Type2 diabetes is when the body can produce insulin but has developed resistance to it so that more of it is needed to absorb the same amount of glucose. Excess sugar in the blood makes it break down faster.
Symptoms of diabetes
If you find that you urinate more frequently than usual and become thirsty and hungry more frequently you might be developing diabetes. It is also associated with weight loss, changes in vision, dry skin, frequent feeling of tiredness and wounds that do not heal easily.
Diabetes is preventable
It has been shown that the changes in diet, loosing weight, and exercise can prevent diabetes in about 60% of the cases.
How diabetes is treated
Treatment of diabetes has the aim of bringing blood glucose level down to normal. This is done through medication, that is insulin injection. But the most important way is nutritional. Those diagnosed with type2 diabetes should refrain from foods with high sugar content like corn syrups, and sugary drinks. They should also avoid starchy foods like potatoes and white bread. They should eat a lot of vegetables and lean proteins such as fish, tofu and egg white, also whole grain foods.
Blood sugar management demand strict adherence to rules and frequent checks. There are a number of dietary supplements that can help. See your doctor about them.
Diabetes management is such that the patient must be in full control. The earlier it is started the better. It can be treated, but prevention is better than cure.
