Dangers of Being Overweight
Being overweight is unhealthy. A survey conducted by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey reveals that about 65% of Americans are obese. There is a healthy weight range for everybody. The difference between this range and your current weight will tell whether you are overweight or underweight. Being obese comes with certain dangerous consequences.
Heart disease
Heart attacks are number one risks associated with being obese. When you are overweight it means that the body is storing excess fat, carbohydrates and bad cholesterol. The result is coronary heart disease. Obesity is also associated with hypertension which makes the heart to work more.
Cancer
Research has shown that those who have high body mass are more prone to developing cancer than others. The higher the body mass of a person, the lower his/her chances of survival from cancer. It was noted that about 15% of deaths caused by cancer are related to obesity.
Gallstones
How this occurs is not known but gallstones are more common in people who are overweight. Gallstones are hard particles that develop in the gall bladder causing abdominal pain and nausea. Though they might not be as risky as heart disease or cancer, they require surgery to remove and mostly the whole gall bladder may be removed.
Diabetes
The number of people living with diabetes is rising in proportion with the number of obesity cases. Excessive weight can lead to further complications in diabetes. It is also one the major causes of type II diabetes.
Strokes
One of the top five leading causes of death is stroke. There are other things that are responsible for stroke but being overweight is closely linked to stroke. Research reveals that people who are 20% overweight have fifty percent risk of developing stroke.
Suffocation
This might sound exaggerated but there is some truth in this. Obese people have greater risk of developing sleep apnea which is caused by breathing obstructions. About fifty percent of Americans diagnosed with apnea are overweight. This should not be surprising because many overweight people have difficulties in breathing.
This means we must live healthy lives that will make us avoid being overweight.
