Constipation And Causes

Constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorder and root cause of most of the health problems amongst children as well as adults. There are some suggestions on how to recognize, diagnose, and treat constipation. There could be many reasons of constipation in a body. In some cases the problem can be prevented and treated by changing habits and lifestyle but others might suffer the disorder due to physiological problems or diseases. Some problems are commonly caused by this gastrointestinal complaint.

Lack of exercises tends to have constipation. The colon should be functioning properly to prevent constipation. Good muscle toning through exercises or work out is important to regularize bowel movements. The abdominal wall muscles and the diaphragm are responsible for the process of defecation. Increasing exercise may be more effective in older people to prevent the problem.

Constipation could be the result of prescribed medication. Some of such medications include antacids that contain diuretics, aluminum, anticholinergics, antispasmodics, antidepressants, calcium-channel blockers, sedatives and tranquilizers, bismuth salts, anticonvulsants and iron supplements. Constipation may be the predominant symptom in case of spasms in the colon that affect bowel movements. It may alternate with diarrhea; cramping, gas, and bloating etc.

In people using laxatives for a longer duration colon becomes dependent on laxatives to spur bowel movements. Changes in life or routine are sometimes also responsible for constipation such as pregnancy may constipate woman because of hormonal changes.

Aging affects the digestive system to become gradually sluggish resulting in slower intestinal activity and muscle tone. Ignoring the urge is very harmful and results in further constipation. People who repeatedly ignore the urge are likely to stop feeling the urge. Water, juice, and other liquids are good to prevent constipation. They add fluid to the colon and form softer stools, thus, easing defecation. Liquids containing caffeine tend to dehydrate the colon.
