Cons Of High Protein Diet

January 12, 2009

Anything high in protein claims that it causes you to burn fat faster and thus makes you leaner faster. Well, the truth is that these are fad diets, and if you really want to stay healthy, then you will do well to avoid them. If you keep on taking proteins and no carbohydrates, your body will go into a state of ketosis, where you liver will convert fat into fatty acids for energy, and the worse part is it will produce ketones, which will increase the acidity of your blood.

It is not good for your kidneys

It can result in damage to your kidneys. These high protein diets offer an initial loss of mainly water weight. When your body goes into a state of ketosis, fat is burnt and to convert the fat into energy, water is used up. This puts a lot of stress on your kidneys.

In addition, during this time, extra calcium is also secreted, which may cause kidney stones. This is because the increased acidity in your blood will cause calcium to be leached from teeth and bones, making them weaker.

It is not good for the heart

Increased levels of protein consumption includes taking in less carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are also essential for our body and we need to keep a balanced diet. In the long run, this type of diet can lead to less amounts of fiber and fruit consumption, which will increase the LDL or bad cholesterol and hence put you at risk of heart disease.

It is also not good for your social life

Your main source of energy is complex and simple carbohydrates. If you cut them out of your diet, you will end up lacking vital nutrients from your brain. This will cause you to become cranky, irritable, dizzy, and you will also feel fatigued. After all, who would want to be around a moody and tired guy who is irritated at the drop of a hat? Besides all that, you will have bad breath, which is characteristic of people on high protein diets.

It is bad for your bowels

Reducing your carb intake will reduce your fiber intake. Fiber passes through your system and does nothing besides absorbing water and hence making your stool easier to pass. However, without fiber, your stool will not have enough water in it and hence will be hard and it will lead to constipation.

Therefore, simply stick to a balanced diet. There is no need to go crazy on a single nutrient, include them as they should be and you will see yourself healthy for a long time.
