We have to realize that there is no single food that can provide all the necessary nutrients. So, we cannot restrict ourselves to any particular food item in excess. We need to find a right balance of nutrients therefore we should have a mixture of different types of food in moderate amounts to ensure the supply of all nutrients.

We can also limit our calorie intake by utilizing a colorful diet. It will be better if we use fruits and vegetables of different colors. These colors indicate the nature of nutrients present in them. So, different colors imply a wider range of nutrients. These colors arise from antioxidants present in the items. They fight cancer and prevent signs of premature aging. The red color of tomatoes is due to an antioxidant Lycopene. It is proven that it protects the DNA from mutations and thus fights cancer.

The abundance of carotenes causes an orange color in fruits and vegetables. Carotenes can be changed into vitamin A and are present in carrots. The carrots should not be cooked because they will lose their nutrients. They should be consumed in raw form for best results.

The presence of Lutein and Quercitin causes yellow color. These help in aiding vision and keep the retina in sound health. They also counter inflammation. They are present in corn, apples and leafy vegetables such as spinach.

What colors do?

When there are Antocyanines in the food items, they cause the purple color. They regulate the blood circulation and maintain good health of the retina. They are richly present in berries therefore berries should be eaten in their raw form for the body to make full use of these nutrients.

The antioxidant Beta Cyanine causes the scarlet color in vegetables. It is present in beets and patients suffering with anemia can find relief if they eat beets regularly as a part of their diet.

A colorful diet not only looks good on your plate but also provides all the necessary nutrients that help the body in its growth.
