Chickenpox
Chickenpox is a highly contagious illness which is caused by an infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV).This disease causes hundreds of itchy, fluid-filled blisters on the skin that burst and form crusts. Most of the time this disease affect children but sometimes it also affects adults.
Chickenpox is transmitted by direct contact with a rash or through contaminated droplets in air or moisture, usually spread by coughing or sneezing. It has 10-20 days incubation period. Symptoms usually go away without treatment, but because the infection is very contagious, an infected child should stay home and rest until the symptoms are gone. Here are some methods to prevent the itching which is the result of this disease.
Once you have had chickenpox then you will very rarely catch chickenpox for a second time. This is because your body develops immunity to the chickenpox virus, which stops you from becoming re-infected.
How to prevent
Chickenpox vaccine is the best way to prevent chickenpox. Vaccination not only protects vaccinated persons, it also reduces the risk for exposure in the community for persons unable to be vaccinated because of illness or other conditions, including those who may be at greater risk for severe disease.
As chickenpox results the itching on the skin so oatmeal water in lukewarm water provide comfort and softness to the itching.
An oral antihistamine can help to ease the itching, as can topical lotions. Lotions containing antihistamine are not as affective as the antihistamine itself.
Some doctors also give antiviral medicines to people in the same household who subsequently come down with chickenpox because of their increased exposure; they would normally experience a more severe case of chickenpox.
Don’t use aspirin if you are having symptoms of chickenpox as aspirin is associated with Reyes syndrome.
Always try to keep yourself cool as heat will give way to sweat and sweat will invites the itching. Try to stay near the pool or in the cool area.
