Causes of Cough
A cough is an action your body takes to get rid of substances that are irritating to your air passages which carry the air you breathe from nose and/or mouth to lungs. Coughing is usually a reflex response of body caused by an irritation in the throat or in the windpipe. Reflex response means when body does something automatically and involuntary. It helps to protect the lungs from bacteria, virus, dust and any other harmful substances.
Frequent occurring cough may indicate the presence of any disease. Coughing is classified as acute if it is present less than three weeks but if it stays more than eight weeks it is called chronic cough. Some of the common causes of cough are mentioned below:
Causes and cures
Smoking can cause the cough and that doesn’t go away. If you are a smoker you should stop smoking at once. You should also consult a doctor and tell him about taking of nicotine patches, gum, inhaler, nasal spray or any other method to get rid of smoking.
A person can cough because of having cancer. You should take special care in that condition.
Allergic reactions can also prove a reason of coughing.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a disease that causes the stomach acids to move up into the esophagus and cause the cough. The reflux type movement occurs when the muscles of esophagus fail to work properly. This may also cause heartburn and belching.
Asthma causes bronchoconstriction and inflammation of airways; it commonly results to the cough. If coughing associated with asthma it may be worsen at night or during exercise.
Infectious cause of cough includes viral, upper respiratory infections like common cold and sinus infection and pneumonia.
Some medicines may cause cough in some people as it gives way to allergic reactions. Avoid taking those medicines. Always take medicines after doctor’s prescription.
Any environmental substance that irritates the air passages or the lungs is capable of producing a chronic cough with continued exposure. Dust, smoke, pollen, chemical fumes and some cleaning agents cause cough in some people.
Water can help you to ease from cough, weather you drink or add it to the air with a steamy shower. If you have either cold or flu antihistamines can help you as compared with non prescribed medicines.
