Carb And Fat Blockers to lose weight

Ever wondered if you could maintain or lose weight simply by popping some pills and not having to worry about long hours of exercise with little or no result? Your fantasy might just seem to be answered with the newest thing that is creating a major hype among people wanting to lose weight, the carb and fat blockers. This article deals with getting to the core of the thing and presenting facts.

What are they?
They are simply dietary supplements that you take to prevent the absorption of carbohydrates and fats into the body system.

Carb blockers mainly consist of bean and wheat germ extract. These, when in the system prevent the absorption of carbohydrates by inhibiting the enzyme that is responsible for breaking down starch.

Fat blockers have chitosan as the main component. It is derived from the exoskeletons of shellfish and is similar to dietary fiber. It passes through the digestive tract and acts like a sponge absorbing 6 to 10 times its weight in fat along the way. It then comes out in the stool.

How bad are they?
In the 80’s government had to remove several carb blockers out of the market because of their ineffectiveness and side effects like bloating, gas, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. They still show these side effects.

The fat blockers are no good either because they also cause cramping, gas and diarrhoea. In addition, long term use of fat blockers may cause vitamin deficiency because some vitamins are fat soluble only. Also not all fats are bad. The body needs some like omega 3 but fat blockers do not know the good from the bad.

How good they are?
If research is to be believed, the both carb and fat blockers do not show to be effective at all in weight loss.

Studies at the Mayo Clinic had this to say. Carb blockers are effective to inhibit the enzyme action and thereby slow down carbohydrate digestion. However, this required a dosage of 4000 to 6000 mg of wheat and bean extract whereas the pills in the market contain only 500 mg at the most. Also slowing down carbohydrate digestion is not proved to lead to weight loss.

Try to block this
