Building Muscle without Steroids

September 3, 2009

buildmuscleswithoutSteroid use has been around for 90 years to enhance performance in sports. Now of course they are illegal in professional sports. Steroid use has given bodybuilding a negative image. There will probably always be some steroid use because they are readily available online until they become more regulated.

Steroids are not prescribed by any reputable physician to build muscle. Steroids should be used for medical use only. They treat many conditions to reduce inflammation.

A real concern is that children are using them. Children as young as ten are using them to enhance their performance or build muscle. In a nutshell, steroids use can cause short-term side effects and long-term damage.

The non-medicinal use of steroids is illegal period. Anabolic steroids are strong synthetics used to copy what testosterone does in the body. They promote the increase in muscle size not strength.

Common side effects are acne. Steroids can cause aggression or change in personality.  Initially anabolic steroids may cause increase in sex drive, and euphoria but that is often followed by distraction, irritability, mood swings confusion, and forgetfulness.

More serious effects are on the cardiovascular system. They can increase blood pressure and cause heart attacks. Steroid use can increase the size of the left ventricle of the heart.

Steroids can increase blood cholesterol. This can cause blood clots and interfere with the blood flow to the heart. Men as young as 30 have had heart attacks related to steroid use.

For teens, steroids can interrupt normal growth causing premature development, which can result in stunted growth. Steroids come in many forms, injection, orally, nasal sprays, patches, and gels. The oral method seems to have the most side effects.

A steroid taken by mouth goes through the digestive system and is processed in the liver to get into the blood. Steroids taken orally require large doses. This can result in liver damage, tumors, and internal bleeding.

Oral steroid indigestion can also cause distended stomach, gas, water retention, and constipation. In high doses, people can develop jaundice, cancer, and hepatitis.

Injected steroids are easier on the liver but still have side effects. If a person tends to get depressed, it can be far worse with steroids causing increase depression, apathy, and fatigue.

Men can experience a short term boost in testosterone but then there is a suppression of natural testosterone and the testes can possibly shrink. In women, there can be an irreversible effect of masculinization including facial and back hair, a deeper voice, male pattern baldness, and clitoral enlargement.

These are some of the dangers of steroid use in bodybuilding or any other sport.  The risks simply outweigh the benefits not to mention the fact that they are illegal.
