Build your Tricep Muscles
April 3, 2009
If you’re looking to have big strong arms, you are going to have to develop your tricep muscles with the proper tricep exercises.
More often than not, when people go to the gym to work their arms, their primary focus is on their biceps. You’ll see them doing endless bicep curls. And if you ask them to show off their arm muscles, they’ll probably just flex their biceps. People tend to forget that their triceps also make up their arm muscles. And for well rounded muscular arms, you will need to work your tricep muscles in addition to your biceps.
Why are your triceps so important? The reason is that your triceps make up 60 percent of your arms, while your bicep is only 30 percent of your arm. So if you decide not to work your triceps, you are choosing to neglect 60 percent of your arm and only work a small 30 percent of the muscles in your arm.
You may not realize it, but your triceps are involved in so many of your weight lifting exercises. They help you lift weights during exercises, such as a military press, bench presses and chin ups. The stronger your triceps are, the easier it is for you to lift heavy weights. Strong tricep muscles will help you through all of your upper body workouts.
Your triceps are comprised of three muscles as compared to your biceps which only have two muscle heads. That is why they are differentiated with the words “tri” and “bi”.
Now that you’ve realized the importance of training your tricep muscles, you have incorporated tricep exercises into your routine. But what do you do if you are not seeing any muscle growth or improvement? The reason could be that you are not performing the triceps exercises properly and using your arm’s full range of motion. The main tricep muscles are located at the top of the arm. To work this muscle group you need to extend your arm further than what you would consider natural.
When you perform tricep exercises, like skull crushes and tricep extensions, your elbows need to be locked into place. Exercises such as the close grip bench press, diamond pushups and cable pull downs do not allow your triceps muscles to move in the full range of motion and they limit the amount of stress you can put on your triceps. While these exercises should be performed, they should not be the basis for your tricep routine.
To work your triceps properly and watch them grow, you need to extend your tricep muscles so that you feel a pull on them when the weight you are using is at its lowest position.
Don’t forget to work your triceps for beautifully well rounded, big arms.
