Benefits of Tanning Beds
November 11, 2009
The first and foremost tanning bed was actually created in the year of 1906, which was in no way connected with getting the best tan. It was created by Heraeus, a famous medical research oriented company.
The major purpose of this kind of tanning was purely medicinal. This was applied initially on patients who had diseases such as rickets and other disorders, which was to check if the increase in sunlight could help them build strong muscles and bones and improve the health of their body and its ability to produce more amounts of calcium.
When time passed, Heraeus found that this led to inventions of the artificial beds, which can be used for tanning. During the 1970’s, these tanning beds became used for cosmetic purposes, deviating from the main purpose, which was medical.
A famous German scientist by the name of Fredrick Wolf tried applying artificial sunlight over athletes. With the hope that the athletic ability can be improved using artificial sunlight, he ended up with a team of tanned athletes.
There are some benefits related to the use of tanning beds. Since, it requires very less time under the sun for us to get the golden tan applied on our body. The main benefit with tanning bed is the privacy it gives while applying tan.
There are no people standing around us to watch us in our swimsuit costume, when we remain with our pale skin after a cold winter. This usually happens when we apply tan at the beach and all of the people watch us during that time.
An additional advantage of the usage of such beds is that, we can apply tan in such beds all around the year, irrespective of which season is on. Unlike the direct sunlight, most of the beds have some control over the emission of ultraviolet rays and the dosage we receive is spread around other tanning beds.
There are some medical reports, which state the exposure of skin to ultra violet rays while tanning can lead to skin cancer. But this is disputable, as there are more than 2 million dollars of revenue obtained from such tanning beds and it’s a very big business.
Tanning industry is making the people believe that these tanning beds are safe as well as healthy. They can help us improve the melanin production in our skin.
Melanin is an essential component in the skin, which can protect it from harmful UV rays of the sun that cause brownness of the skin. But not all people agree with these assessments and some of them prefer natural tanning under the sun at the beach and consider it as a safe method.
