Benefits of sea vegetables

Sea vegetables can be found growing both in the marine salt waters as well as in fresh water lakes and seas. They commonly grow on coral reefs or in rocky landscapes, they can grow at great depths provided that sunlight can penetrate through the water, like plants, they need light for their survival. Sea vegetables are neither plants nor animals but classified in a group known as algae.

They contain plenty of minerals, majorly all the minerals found in the ocean-the same minerals that are found in human blood. Sea vegetables are an excellent source of iodine and vitamin K, a very good source of the B-vitamin folate, and magnesium, and a good source of iron and calcium, and the B-vitamins riboflavin and pantothenic acid. In addition, sea vegetables contain good amounts of lignans, plant compounds with cancer-protective properties

Sea vegetables are rich in the important mineral iodine. Without this critical mineral, the thyroid cannot produce sufficient levels of thyroid hormone which is important for regulating metabolism and maintaining life. Benefits of sea vegetables are great they can help in curing serious thyroid.

Other benefits of sea vegetables are that they have anti inflammatory properties. Brown seaweed as well as several other sea vegetables that contains a biochemical known as fucoidan which has anti-inflammatory properties. Fucoidan may help to lower the inflammatory response that is thought to be responsible for a variety of chronic diseases including cancer.

Sea vegetables also help in detoxifying. A component of sea vegetables known as alginate has been shown to be effective in treating exposure to heavy metals and radiation. Alginates seem to have the capability of binding to and helping flush out of the body heavy metals and radio nucleotides, thus reducing the ability of these components to cause DNA damage and disease. Thus they help in reducing the risk of cancer.
