Benefits of having chocolate milk after a work out
The meal or drink after a workout should always be nutritious as you burn a lot of calories while exercising. Post workout is the time when your body is extremely open to accepting amino acids and carbohydrates that replenish muscle glycogen and tissues.
Chocolate milk is a refreshing drink that contains the required proteins and carbohydrates while at the same time not being too high in calories as you have the option of using fat free milk.
Each brand differs slightly in its composition and it is better to check while buying. Let’s look at why chocolate milk is beneficial.
Proteins: Chocolate milk contains a lot of the required proteins for our body. One cup is said to contain eight to ten milligrams of protein. You should replace at least 15 to 25mg of protein after a workout.
For this, you should drink at least 500 ml of chocolate milk. Milk based proteins are said to be better for the body than other types of proteins as they are absorbed faster.
The proteins in milks are divided into 80% casein proteins and 20% whey proteins. Whey proteins are digested faster, and will enter our system immediately, while the casein proteins are ingested in to our body over a period and are better for us in the long term.
Carbohydrates: A carbohydrate intake immediately after a work out boosts the insulin levels and sends the glucose into the muscles. This restores the lost calories and maintains your energy levels.
A study was undertaken with individuals who worked out. One person was given chocolate milk post workout and the other was given a carbohydrate replacement drink.
The person drinking the chocolate milk was found to be fitter and recovered better from the workouts than the person having the carbohydrate replacement.
Calcium: Milk is said to be a rich source of calcium and drinking chocolate milk on a daily basis increases your everyday calcium content. Calcium helps strengthen your bones while also improving your power stroke.
A power stroke is when tension is created in your muscle fibers causing them to contract. A glass of chocolate milk contains anywhere between 300mgs to 500mgs of calcium.
