Benefits of Fiber
With the growing health awareness in people, they are becoming more conscious of eating a high fiber diet due to the various benefits it provides to the body. Since fibers are indigestible, they do not contribute to the adding of nutrients in the body. This made many people think that fibers are just an additional food item which apart from making one feel full, do not contribute to health enhancement. However, nutritionists have discovered that fiber performs valuable functions in the body which can lead to the overall well being of a person.
People who want to reduce weight are generally advised to consume a high fiber diet. This is because fibers provide a feeling of fullness in the body without adding any calories and they thus aid in less eating by a person. In addition, fibers help in the smooth functioning of the digestive system and thus prevent stomach related problems and constipation. Moreover, it has been found that a high fiber diet can be beneficial in preventing a person from colon cancer.
Along with aiding in weight management and smooth functioning of the digestive system, fibers also provide other health benefits like keeping one’s cholesterol and blood sugar under check and thus providing help for the healthy functioning of one’s heart. Soluble fibers found in fruits, vegetables, seeds, oats and others help in reducing cholesterol levels in the body. Similarly, they slow down digestion in the stomach and small intestine which helps in slowing down the conversion of carbohydrates into glucose thereby aiding in the stabilization of blood sugar levels.
To live a healthy and a happy life, one should eat a high fiber diet by eating a variety of foods, fruits and vegetables. In addition, one should eat plenty of liquids or else fibers can slow down proper intestinal digestion.
