Benefits of Carrier Oils
What is carrier oil? Carrier oil is really just a fancy way of saying vegetable oil. The purpose of carrier oil is to dilute the scent of the essential oil. Carrier oils are most commonly used when the essential oil is being applied directly to the skin.
When an essential oil is applied to the skin without the addition of carrier oil, the essential oil doesn’t adhere to the skin, it just evaporates into thin air, taking its scent with it. When you mix a drop of carrier oil into the essential oil your skin absorbs the scent.
How they are made
One of the biggest differences between an essential oil and carrier oil is that when a person is making an essential oil they use the bark, leaves, flowers, and roots of a plant. When a person is using a plant to make carrier oil, the portion of the plant that will be used is the seeds and nuts. When you are making carrier oil you are trying to use the plant’s fatty acids.
Types of Carrier Oils
When a person is looking for a carrier oil to dilute their essential oil, they should select carrier oil that is made out of olives, almonds, Evening primrose, Avocado, Jojoba oil, Sesame, Sunflower. You can purchase a bottle of carrier oil at your local grocery store; they should be in the baking section.
Using Carrier Oils
When you purchase scented lotions and body washes the proper amount of carrier oil has already been added to the product. But if you are someone who makes their own lotions and soaps you will have to experiment with the proper amount of carrier oils.
The best way to do this is to start with a very small amount of carrier oil and rub some of your homemade recipe on the back of your hand. When the lotion soaks into your skin instead of evaporating you’ll know that you have exactly the right mixture.
If you are using scented candles for your aromatherapy and feel that the scent is overwhelming, try rubbing a small amount of carrier oil onto the side of the candle. The carrier oil will help dilute the scent.
